When I was little I walked out of a pharmacy with this in my hands. It influenced the art I created, interests I now have, games I got into - everything, like a domino effect. I haven't seen it since I was little, but have thought about it over the years. I see pictures that are like best friends and remember them like it was yesterday, and how strongly I felt about them. I'll definitely check them out. As far as the name goes I don't particularly like it either, but I don't know what else to call the class. Some of the skills are definitely necormantic in nature (raise dead, compell the dead, etc.), some of them are only slightly related (speak with the dead, sense violence, etc.), yet they kind of all fall under the same umbrella.

I just don't know what else to call them.John Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15768771014487413321noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8851951522759372192.post-50203083363800828192012-08-06T11:06:20.496-06:002012-08-06T11:06:20.496-06:00Magic for investigation is always an interesting p...Magic for investigation is always an interesting path to follow. I recommend looking at Randall Garretts Lord Darcy series (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_Darcy_%28character%29) which included forensic magic. And you probably should title the magic something other than necromancy (which, technically, is divination by way of the dead in any case).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8851951522759372192.post-62238062893736228132012-08-06T10:26:45.798-06:002012-08-06T10:26:45.798-06:00Yeah my concern would be that the player would rea...Yeah my concern would be that the player would reach the level of commanding the dead/raising the dead and go full bore evil.

A society based around accepted necromancy could also be very interesting. Why not empty the graveyards of dead people and use them for menial labor instead of paying someone else to do it, or instead of using slaves? Wouldn't undead infantry be more humane on your society than using regular infantry? That's a good point about the scrolls, but again that's reliant upon the same issue as faces the fighter--the magic user has to find the scroll before he can use it.

Mostly the debate comes down to a philosophical difference for me in that I'm not a fan of Vancian magic, which is what D&D seems to be based around. I'd prefer that there not be any spells at all, rather that a person simply be able to cast whatever it is they have the ability to do.John Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15768771014487413321noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8851951522759372192.post-71190538817412066672012-01-28T00:52:16.265-07:002012-01-28T00:52:16.265-07:00To elaborate, I see it more like this: a first lev...To elaborate, I see it more like this: a first level fighter could wield a +5 sword at first level if the fighter had such a sword. But the first level fighter will not have such a sword; it has to be discovered first. Likewise, finding (or researching) a new spell is a great treasure for a magic-user in games that I run. Also, in D&D magic-users can cast spells of any level provided they cast the spell from a scroll. They only have to wait until higher levels to be able to prepare some spells. For some reason, scrolls often are underused, and I think that is a shame. In my opinion, they solve most of the issues people bring up with the magic-user class.Necropraxishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12716340801054739658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8851951522759372192.post-68288487604306998232012-01-28T00:47:01.850-07:002012-01-28T00:47:01.850-07:00But isn't it part of the fun to discover the n...But isn't it part of the fun to discover the new spells through play?
